Echocardiogram Specialist in Tampa and Palm Harbor, FL

What Is an Echocardiogram?

An echocardiogram, often called an echo or heart ultrasound, is a non-invasive imaging test that uses sound waves to create real-time pictures of the heart's structure and function. It allows a cardiologist to evaluate the size and shape of the heart, the function of the heart chambers, the health and movement of the heart valves, blood flow patterns through the heart, and the presence of fluid around the heart. At Care Cardiology and Vein Center, Dr. Saleem Saiyad, MD, FACC, is a top-rated board-certified cardiologist who performs and interprets echocardiograms as part of comprehensive cardiac care for patients in Tampa, Palm Harbor, and across Tampa Bay.

The echocardiogram is one of the most important and widely used diagnostic tools in cardiology. It provides detailed, real-time information that no other non-invasive test can match, making it indispensable for diagnosing heart disease, monitoring treatment response, and guiding clinical decisions.

Why Would a Cardiologist Order an Echocardiogram?

A cardiologist orders an echocardiogram for a wide range of clinical indications. These include evaluation of chest pain, shortness of breath, or palpitations, assessment of known or suspected heart failure, evaluation of heart murmurs or valve disease, monitoring of high blood pressure and its effect on the heart, screening patients with a family history of cardiomyopathy or structural heart disease, pre-operative cardiac evaluation, and follow-up assessment after a heart attack, cardiac procedure, or valve repair. An echocardiogram can also be ordered as a preventive screening tool for patients with multiple cardiovascular risk factors.

What Are the Different Types of Echocardiograms?

Transthoracic Echocardiogram (TTE)

The standard transthoracic echocardiogram is the most common type and involves placing a handheld transducer against the chest to obtain images. It is painless, requires no preparation, and takes approximately 30 to 60 minutes. TTE provides excellent visualization of cardiac structure and function for most patients.

Stress Echocardiogram

A stress echocardiogram combines standard echo imaging with an exercise or pharmacologic stress test to evaluate how the heart performs under exertion. This test is particularly valuable for detecting coronary artery disease that may not be apparent at rest.

Doppler Echocardiogram

Doppler technology is incorporated into nearly all echocardiograms to measure the speed and direction of blood flow through the heart chambers and valves. This is essential for evaluating valve stenosis and regurgitation as well as pulmonary pressures.

What Does an Echocardiogram Diagnose?

An echocardiogram can identify or confirm heart failure, cardiomyopathy (disease of the heart muscle), valvular heart disease (stenosis or regurgitation of any of the four heart valves), congenital heart defects, pericardial disease (fluid or inflammation around the heart), blood clots or tumors inside the heart, pulmonary hypertension, and the effects of high blood pressure on heart structure and function.
